Hugh Fancher “Shawby” Shaw, 85, of Sturgis, died Saturday, July 31, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman, which is handling the arrangements, and from 9 a.m to service time Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Sturgis Baptist Church.
The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sturgis Baptist, with burial following at Pleasant Hill Cemetery south of Sturgis.
The Revs. Steve Lammons, Halton Davis and Russell Mord will officiate.

Hughes putting lessons learned to use

Nate Hughes is holding on lessons he's learned throughout his football career in hopes of making a difference in the National Football League.
The former Starkville High School football player is back in camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars and likes his chances for more playing time.
The Jaguars indicated to Hughes that he may figure more into their plans this season.

Prep notebook: SHS football scrimmage, SA softball

Less than a week after beginning preparations for the 2010 football season, it's evident there's a buzz around the Starkville High football program.
First-year SHS coach Jamie Mitchell led the Yellowjackets through a nearly two-hour long scrimmage on Saturday, and plenty of eyes captured it all.
"(The crowd) was awesome," said Mitchell. "We want people to come see us. I'm gonna say there were probably 100 fans here today, and for us that's big. That matters to these kids. They know who's over there and we're just tickled to death."

In-state baseball star give verbal commitment to Miss. State

Before he committed to Mississippi State Saturday afternoon, Gulfport High School senior-to-be Jonathan Holder already knew he can hit at Dudy Noble Field.
The 17-year-old prospect that stands 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds impressed scouts and coaches in a home run derby before an all-star game on MSU's campus by hitting two balls deep over the walls of Polk-Dement Stadium.
"Today Mississippi State got one of the best baseball players in the state that has a chance to be a major contributor at the next level," Gulfport head coach Tim Dowdy said.

MSU to introduce plan for Davis-Wade Stadium renovations

The first day Scott Stricklin took the job as athletic director, he said Mississippi State needed to dream big.
He’s now putting his words into something concrete, or maybe brick, but definitely something solid.
“More than anything else, it’s important to have a plan. We’re in the stages of working to put that plan together,” Stricklin said in an exclusive interview with the Starkville Daily News Tuesday. “I hope when we’re done with the plan we can then figure out what the first
steps are to start making that vision a reality."

CRAWFORD — The funeral for Misty Glenn Gentry will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, at Bethesda Baptist Church here.
Burial will follow in the Bethesda Cemetery near Crawford. Bro. Allen Dees will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon, which is handling the arrangements.
Miss Gentry died Friday, July 30, 2010, at her home in Crawford. She was 34. A native of Keokuk, Iowa, she was an artist and a member of Bethesda Baptist Church in Crawford.

The funeral for Will Rush Leonard will be today at 11 a.m. at First John Baptist Church in Starkville with burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville. The Rev. Therman Cunningham will officiate.
Visitation was held Friday at Century Hairston Funeral Home in Columbus and will be held today from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at First John Baptist Church.
Mr. Leonard, 76, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Starkville Manor Nursing Home.
Century Hairston Funeral Home of Columbus will be in charge of funeral arrangements.
