Many years ago — shoot, nearly 10 — my brother and I woke on Thanksgiving morning to the clucking of chickens and, strangely, the chortle of a turkey. The beach roaches scattered onto the sand (“beach roaches” makes them sound more happy-go-lucky and hapless than when you see one perched on your toothbrush) as we stumbled out of our bamboo hut to the front porch.Â
LOUISVILLE – Blair Schaefer poured in 44 points, mainly by hitting 25-of-26 free throws, to lead the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets to a 67-64 victory over the Louisville Lady Wildcats Tuesday night.
After Starkville jumped out to an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, Louisville out-scored the visitors 24-19 in the second quarter to take a 34-30 advantage at halftime.

MATHISTON – In midweek action at the gymnasium on the former Wood Junior College campus, the East Webster Wolverines and the Houston Hilltoppers split hard wood competition.
The Lady Wolverines pulled off a thrilling 45-36 victory over the Lady Hilltoppers, while the Wolverines dropped their contest 54-28.

The Starkville Historic Preservation Commission smoothed the boundaries of its proposed Overstreet and Greensboro local historic districts through strategic additions to and subtractions from the districts at its meeting Thursday.

The city of Starkville will soon launch its revamped website, which local officials say will offer more interactivity between city residents and their government and provide more information to non-residents seeking information about the city.
Mr. Robert Earle Gandy of Starkville, 62, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 in Tupelo.
Funeral services will be held 11a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at Sixteen Section M.B. Church in Starkville with Rev. J.W. Richardson officiating.
Burial will follow at New Prairie Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be held noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 at Century-Hairston Funeral Home.
