Reported West Nile Virus cases in Mississippi broke record numbers in 2012.
As of Dec. 11, 249 human cases of the mosquito-borne illness were reported in the state, compared to 52 instances in 2011. Deaths due to the illness, however, remained equal to the previous yearâs total of five.

WASHINGTON â The end game at hand, the White House and Senate leaders launched a final attempt at compromise Friday night in hopes of preventing a toxic blend of middle-class tax increases and spending cuts from taking effect at the turn of the new year.

DEKALB â Starkville Highâs Lady Yellowjackets spent part of their holiday break competing in the Kemper County Christmas Tournament Friday night.
In their only game of the event, the Lady Jackets fell to the Jaguars of Sumter Central in Ala., 55-48.
âThey were a scrappy team that played hard and battled us the whole game,â Starkville girls coach Kristie Williams said.
SENATOBIA â While participating in the Magnolia Heights Tournament, the Starkville Academy Volunteers knocked off Class 5A public school Hernando 44-42.
â(It was a) big win for us and for our confidence,â Starkville Academy boys coach Mark Alexander said. âWe had a slow start, but picked it up during the second half.â
