Pesticides aren’t the only way to protect crops from pests.

Before retiring as an entomology professor at MSU, Henry Pitre spent several years working with graduate students in Central America and East Africa, where he said farmers cannot simply board an airplane and spray pesticides on their fields from above.

Bryant signs declaration, meeting set

The Mississippi Department of Education will send representatives to meet with parents and community leaders at 6 p.m. Monday at East Oktibbeha County High School, where the representatives will communicate a plan of action to correct conditions that prompted Gov. Phil Bryant to declare a state of emergency in the Oktibbeha County School District Friday.

Back to the grind for Bulldogs after open date

Mississippi State enjoyed a bye week during week five of the college football season, leaving a Saturday open for head coach Dan Mullen to take a day away from the grind.

“I played with my son and my daughter, hung out with my wife, (and) had a good time,” said Mullen.

Stepping away from football doesn’t mean he didn’t keep an eye on the action.

Giant Gators defeat young Bulldogs in volleyball

It was one of those "David vs. Goliath" type of matchups Sunday afternoon in Southeastern Conference volleyball action between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Florida Gators.

In one corner were the Gators with their No. 12 ranking, undefeated conference record and seven-match winning streak overall.

It was a gorgeous cool early morning on Oct. 13, 1999 when I packed up all of my art supplies, slammed the back screen door and headed to 204 East Main Street to paint for the entire day ahead. The day before I had spotted in a front store window of our old Weir’s Drug Store which is now Sullivan’s Office Supply something as cute as a bug.

I usually go to bed with my remote control. It’s become my pacifier and my lifeline to the broader world. Being a bit of an insomniac, I often awake at 2 a.m. with my pacifier clutched tightly in my fist. I instantly click it to reruns of Cheers or Frazier, and they put me right back to sleep.

Supes to consider new deputy cars

The Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors will consider authorizing the purchase of 15 new cars for the Sheriff’s Department at its meeting 9 a.m. meeting Monday at the county courthouse.

Sheriff Steve Gladney said he hopes the board will move forward with his request so he can replenish the department’s fleet.
