’12 WNV cases break previous year’s numbers

Reported West Nile Virus cases in Mississippi broke record numbers in 2012.

As of Dec. 11, 249 human cases of the mosquito-borne illness were reported in the state, compared to 52 instances in 2011. Deaths due to the illness, however, remained equal to the previous year’s total of five.

Columbus holds off Midfield, Ala., 35-34

The Columbus Falcons could have thrown in the towel when they lost the lead to the Midfield, Ala. Patriots Friday afternoon.

That didn't happen.

After holding the advantage for most of the game at the Humphrey Coliseum on the Mississippi State campus, Columbus trailed 32-30 with 4 minutes left in the game.

Lady Yellowjackets drop game at event

DEKALB – Starkville High’s Lady Yellowjackets spent part of their holiday break competing in the Kemper County Christmas Tournament Friday night.

In their only game of the event, the Lady Jackets fell to the Jaguars of Sumter Central in Ala., 55-48.
“They were a scrappy team that played hard and battled us the whole game,” Starkville girls coach Kristie Williams said.

SA boys defeat public school Hernando 44-42

SENATOBIA – While participating in the Magnolia Heights Tournament, the Starkville Academy Volunteers knocked off Class 5A public school Hernando 44-42.

“(It was a) big win for us and for our confidence,” Starkville Academy boys coach Mark Alexander said. “We had a slow start, but picked it up during the second half.”
