JACKSON — More than 25 people were injured and at least 70 homes were damaged in Mississippi by the severe storms that pushed across the South on Christmas Day, authorities said Wednesday.

As the holiday season continues to roll along through the new year, Starkville residents may find themselves looking for tips to begin or maintain healthy eating and exercise habits. 

OCH Wellness Connection Director Eddie Myles said he called this time of year the “hibernation months” when the weather is much cooler and people are less inclined to get out and exercise.

Jackets progress with Mitchell as coach

The Starkville Yellowjackets have seen progress in the last three football seasons with Jamie Mitchell as coach.

After finishing with a 5-6 record and missing the playoffs in Mitchell's first season, the Jackets went 12-3 and lost to Picayune in the Class 5A State title game, then SHS completed the deal with a 28-11 victory over Pascagoula to bring the State title home.

Beginning Wednesday and running through Friday, the Jackets will host the “Travis Outlaw Slam Dunk at the Hump” boys basketball tournament.

Career criminals becoming an issue

JACKSON — The Mississippi Supreme Court has sent the Legislature a message: If you want burglary considered a violent crime to catch more career criminals, you’d better write it into the law.
