A house fire claimed the life of an elderly Starkville woman today and sent one other to OCH Regional Medical Center.
Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt confirmed 86-year-old Mary Elizabeth Foster of 303 Everglade Avenue died of smoke inhalation in her residence this afternoon. No foul play is suspected, Hunt said. Her body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
Austin Tyler Poole pleaded guilty today to six counts of aggravated DUI in connection to a May 2012 accident that killed 19-year-old Treasure K. Huffman and injured six others.
Poole, 19, was sentenced to 25 years in prison with five years suspended on the first count and five years in prison on each of the other counts to run concurrent with the first count.

Mississippi State University will host a Women of Color Summit at 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Colvard Student Union’s Foster ballroom with the aim of discussing issues and statistics impacting minority women and ways to increase their chances of academic success.

Former Ward 7 Alderman Janette Self qualified Wednesday to run for election as a Democrat in that same ward.
Self, who served from 2005-09, was defeated by current Ward 7 Alderman Henry Vaughn when she ran for re-election four years ago. Vaughn has also qualified as a Democrat to run for a second term.

WASHINGTON — Saturday mail may soon go the way of the Pony Express and penny postcards. The Postal Service said Wednesday that it plans to cut back to five-day-a-week deliveries for everything except packages to stem its financial losses in a world radically re-ordered by the Internet.
