Hughes plans move into medical field

Nate Hughes calls the 4 1/2 years he spent in the National Football League an "awesome" experience.
Now it's time for a change for the former Starkville High School player.
If things work out like Hughes wants, he might actually work on injured football players one day as a doctor.
Hughes plans to apply for medical school this week and actually takes his MCAT on Thursday.

Board to override veto on Spruill

Three weeks after the Starkville Board of Aldermen initially voted to terminate Chief Adminstrative Officer Lynn Spruill's employment with the city, the board is expected to revisit the matter one last time at tonight's board meeting.

Citizens expected to rally for Spruill

July 23, 2013

Residents of Starkville are expected to gather at 5 p.m. this evening on the steps of City Hall to lend support to Chief Administrative Officer Lynn Spruill.

The Board of Aldermen elected to terminate Spruill’s employment with the city in a 5-2 vote on July 2, which Mayor Parker Wiseman vetoed in the days thereafter. The board is expected to revisit the matter at tonight’s meeting.

New school year brings volunteer demand

Local demand for volunteers is ramping up as the new school year draws closer, with Mississippi State University, the Starkville School District and other local organizations making requests for aid in the coming weeks.

LaFrance Carson

July 22, 2013

LaFrance A. Carson, 42, died on July 15, 2013 in Starkville, Mississippi.

Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m.  on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 @ West Memorial Chapel, Starkville, MS, with Rev. Rena Lanier, officiating.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 22, 2013 from 12-6pm at West Memorial Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery, Starkville,MS.

Strong behind center: SEC showcases many talented quarterbacks

There's a good argument that could be made that the Southeastern Conference has one of the better quarterback pools this season.
The league has always been known to have good running backs, and subpar signal callers. This season some of the best players under center play in the SEC.

SPRD sees stretch run for softball season

The stretch run for the Starkville Parks and Recreation softball season is taking place.
It won't be long before thoughts turn from softball to football.
Regular season and tournament softball is expected to continue through mid August, then the flag football season starts Sept. 16.
