Teams use big innings in USSSA pool play

The big innings appeared to be the theme on Thursday as the United States Speciality Sports Association 11-Under State Tournament got underway at the Starkville Sportsplex.
The Mississippi Bash used a five-run fourth inning for insurance in their game as they earned a 10-2 victory against the Golden Spikes 11-U Navy in the Class A division.

Starkville High School student attends Summer Youth Institute

Starkville High School junior Catherine Buffington was one of 28 students selected to attend the Summer Youth Institute hosted by the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at the University of Mississippi.

The Summer Youth Institute is a nine-day camp for rising high school sophomores and juniors that focuses on leadership and community building, as well as civil rights history.

Dean objects to teacher prep ratings

Mississippi State University College of Education Dean Richard Blackbourn fired back at the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) Wednesday for a report on teacher preparation that listed his college and several others as mediocre or worse.

Evie Vance

Funeral services for Ms. Evie Jewel Tatum Vance will be held at 2pm, Saturday, June 22nd at Milling Funeral Home Chapel, Union, MS. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:00pm prior to the service. A graveside service will follow at Erin Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Rev. Chris Harrison officiating.

Mona Lyon

Mona Manning Lyon was born on December 17, 1926 to George Warren Manning, Sr. and Mattie Hughes Manning on a farm near Drew, Mississippi. She attended the Drew public schools and graduated from Drew High School in 1943. While a student at Mississippi State College for Women, she was Business Manager of the school newspaper and graduated Suma Cum Laude in 1947.

Girodo gets hot for Bulldogs

OMAHA, Neb. – Thomas Edison and Chad Girodo have something in common according to Mississippi State pitching coach Butch Thompson.
Edison, a 19th century inventor, and Girodo, a left-handed pitcher for the Bulldogs, both overcome obstacles to until success knocked on their doors.

WAIT COLUMN: Bulldogs enjoy time at the zoo while in Omaha

I am enjoying my time in Omaha, Neb., and so are the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
MSU is 2-0 in the College World Series for just the second time and do not play again until Friday. They will have to be beaten twice.
The Bulldogs are one win away from the best-of-three championship series next week.
