Resolutions Revolution

The end of January can mean many things. Next week is the Super Bowl, the official sad end of football season. If today we are wearing shorts outside, tomorrow we are sledding. And New Year’s resolutions are drawing to a close.

I wonder why so many resolutions bite the dust so early? Ponder with me.

Gloria Shook Phillips, 90, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at her residence in Franklin, Tenn.

Funeral services will begin 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at First United Methodist Church in Starkville.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville. Another visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Rodney Waldrop

January 29, 2013

Dr. Rodney Wayne Waldrop, 61, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at his home in Starkville after a brave battle with cancer. 

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Starkville with Rev. Chip Stevens officiating.
Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Park Cemetery.

The last time the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets did not have a pleasant experience the last time they played on an artificial turf field.

Bulldogs looking toward big week

The Mississippi State men's basketball team is trying to get back on the right track.

The Bulldogs started the Southeastern Conference season 2-0. Since then, they have dropped four contests in the league and now sit at 2-4 and tied for 7th in the league.

Cougars finish strong in win

Caleb Jordan showed a couple of talents on senior night at Starkville Christian School Monday night.
First, Jordan used his voice by singing the national anthem prior to the girls varsity game, then he used his basketball skill to lead the Cougars to a 65-56 win over the Kemper Academy Rams.

Jordan was one of three SCS players with double-doubles. He had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Starkville Academy shuts out Heritage 2-0

On an unseasonably warm afternoon the soccer teams of Starkville Academy and Heritage faced off with the Volunteers looking to make it two in a row following a victory over Presbyterian Christian School on Saturday.

Coach Robert Garner and his team got their wish as they defeated the Patriots 2-0 and moved one step closer to the playoffs.

Supporters of HPC proposal address citizens’ concerns

Citizens within the local historic district boundaries proposed by the Starkville Historic Preservation Commission are expressing support for the districts and addressing concerns citizens raised during the HPC’s public hearing on the districts Jan. 22.
