Board silences proposal for Emerson "brain trust"

Board member Eric Heiselt proposed at the Starkville School District Board of Trustees' meeting Tuesday that the district create a "brain trust" to let stakeholders determine the financial viability of toddler care slated for discontinuation at Emerson Family Center, but the proposal died for lack of a second.

Thomas Wayne O’Brian, formerly of Maben, passed away at his home in Chatsworth, Ga. on Aug. 3, 2013. He was 64 years old.

Thomas Wayne is survived by his wife, Deborah O’Brian; brother, Donald O’Brian (Brenda). Two nieces, Traci Mann and Mitzi Phelps and one aunt, Anna Laura Keller.

Mr. David Leigh Kirkman, 53 Maben, MS passed away in Arcola, MS; on Monday, August 12, 2013.

David was the owner of Covered K Arena and of Kirkman Logging, a bull rider, rodeo clown, rodeo announcer and a member of Mathiston First Baptist Church.

Terry Leigh Thomas passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, August 10, 2013. Mr. Thomas was a native Mississippian who spent his early years in Louisville, and his adult life in Meridian and Starkville. He was most recently a resident of Ocean Springs, where he moved to be near his daughters, Susie Thomas Ranager and Marty Thomas Kuki.

Mississippi State is in the heart of preseason practice.
The Bulldogs have been on the practice fields since Aug. 1. The first few practices were light and were more of revamp for the older guys and a transition for the younger guys.
Summer school is over and the fall semester is close to getting started. 
Coach Dan Mullen's squad is right in the thick of things as two-a-days have hit.
