Home opener in league next on MSU slate

The trip to Florida last Thursday night was an eye-opener for the Mississippi State women's basketball team.
In an 82-72 loss to the Gators in Gainesville, coach Vic Schaefer said the Bulldogs "saw some of our issues," and have spent the last two days trying to get those corrected.

Bulldogs enjoy an off weekend, Ray recruits

With Mississippi State playing this last Thursday, the Bulldogs had the weekend off.
MSU head coach Rick Ray had some time on his hands, so he hit the road and did a little recruiting over the first weekend of the new year.
“It’s really weird not playing at all this weekend,” Ray tweeted Saturday afternoon. “Taking advantage of it by seeing some quality recruits right now and (Friday night).”

Lady Volunteers sharp defensively in easy win

JACKSON – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers played one of their most suffocating defensive outings of the season on Saturday afternoon and defeated Richland 58-22 at the Jackson Prep Tournament.
The Lady Vols, who improved their record to 15-6, pitched a shut out in the first quarter and secured a 15-0 lead.

East Webster boys suffer tough loss at tournament

NEW HOPE – The East Webster Wolverines were invited to be a part of a talented collection of boys basketball teams at the Trojan Holiday Classic on Saturday.
East Webster was matched up against one of the best teams in the mix with the undefeated South Lamar Stallions from Alabama standing in its way.

Learning of deaths came as much shock

Sportswriters get to meet many special people as they go about their business on a daily basis.
It came with very much shock and sadness to learn that two people that I have met along my journey passed away recently.

James H. (Tip) Oswalt

James H. (Tip) Oswalt, 80, passed away on January 3, 2014 at his residence in Columbus, MS.  He was a retired machinist for Oktibbeha County and member of Canaan Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rassie Oswalt and Ola West Oswalt.

Willie James Lawrence, 59, died January 1, 2014 in Starkville, Mississippi.
 Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2013 at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Starkville, Mississippi with Reverend Charles Brown, officiating.
 Visitation will be Saturday, January 4, 2013 from 2-6:00 p.m. at West Memorial Funeral Home.

Wilson's future on court at MSU still in question

Mississippi State true freshman wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson future with the Bulldog basketball team is still in question.
The Birmingham, Ala. native was selected as Alabama’s Mr. Basketball after his senior season at Wenonah High School.
He came to MSU on a football scholarship, but always had intentions of playing basketball inside Humphrey Coliseum for head coach Rick Ray.

Sykes progresses after injury, surgery

It has been since last May that April Sykes has played a basketball game.
The former East Oktibbeha player has wanted to be on the court, but an injury and eventual surgery kept her from doing so.
Sykes developed a fracture of the left tibia that progressively got worse during training camp and prior to last season with the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association.
