Evelyn Maloney Rook, 89, of Braxton, passed away on November 16, 2014. Visitation will be at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, Highway 13, Mendenhall, Mississippi, from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, November 20, 2014. Services will be held at St. Peter's Cathedral, Friday, November 21, 2014 at 2pm, with burial at Lakewood Memorial Park immediately following services.

Brenda Joyce Scarborough Payne

Brenda Payne, 73, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2014.  Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, with the funeral service immediately following in the funeral home chapel.  Burial will be in Memorial Garden Park Cemetery.

Soaking up history: Volunteers experience Mississippi Sports Hall

JACKSON – One step into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and it is clear that football has a storied history in the Magnolia State.
On Monday, a group of Starkville Academy athletes got to experience the Hall of Fame as they took part in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools football state championship press conference.

Mullen said his focus on MSU, not rumors on coach openings

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen needed two wins in the final two regular season games to get bowl eligible a year ago.
The Bulldogs won those games and knocked off Rice to win the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. There was mention of Mullen being on the hot seat entering those final two games.

Mississippi State put on a shooting clinic inside Humphrey Coliseum Monday night.
The Bulldogs shot 60 percent from the field as they routed in-state foe Mississippi Valley State 89-68.

Lady Cougars' tough defense leads to victory

It wasn't the type of offensive effort that coach Mark Horstemeyer wanted, but the Starkville Christian Lady Cougars played well enough defensively to make up for it on Monday.
The Lady Cougars frustrated the visiting Central Academy Lady Vikings, especially on the inside, and won a 52-41 decision at home.

Taylor building legacy of dedication, longevity

Little can stop Caddy Taylor from attending a meeting of the Starkville Pilot Club.
Club member Ellen Mauldin said when Taylor was young and relatively new to the club, she missed very few meetings even when she was having her children. And now that Taylor has been part of the club for more than 60 years, Mauldin said she is still a faithful standby at the meetings.
