Downtown murals drawing attention

A new mural on the old service station next to Stromboli’s is drawing eyes and generating conversation.

The mural, one side of which depicts a fox with birds perched on the pipes that make up its eyes, is the result of a collaboration between the Greater Starkville Development Partnership’s Main Street Association, Stromboli’s and the Mural Collective of Starkville.

Board OKs improvements - $1.2 million plan lays out improved infrastructure, drainage

The Starkville Board of Aldermen approved City Engineer Edward Kemp’s proposed 2014 capital improvement plan after a brief public hearing Tuesday evening.

Kemp presented his $1.2 million plan to the board during a special recess meeting. Aldermen voted 5-0 to adopt the plan, with Ben Carver and Jason Walker of Wards 1 and 4, respectively, absent.

Pedestrian dies in accident

A Starkville woman is dead after a vehicle struck her Thursday on Highway 182 in Lowndes County.

Mississippi Highway Patrol reported that 27-year-old Sharonica Puckett was killed when Charles Mays, also 27 of Louisville, who was driving a 2002 Dodge pickup, hit her on the highway near US Highway 45 Alt.

BATTLE OF THE SIRENS - SFD, SPD to square off in charity softball game

Starkville Police and Fire departments are set to square off against each other on the softball diamond for a good cause.

The departments will face each other in the inaugural Battle of the Sirens at 2 p.m. May 31 at the Starkville Sportsplex in a fundraising effort to assist victims of the April 28 EF4 tornado that devastated Louisville and Winston County.
