Man arrested in break-in at SHS campus

Starkville Police Department arrested a man after responding to an break-in alarm call at Starkville High School early Wednesday morning.

According to an SPD press release, officers responded to the alarm at 2 a.m. Upon arrival, they reportedly found the doors to the school were open and began searching the building, where they found 22-year-old Deairious Kwamain Cooper.

Running with the Bull…Dawgs event slated for Saturday at Cotton District

Each July, brave souls from around the world dash through the streets of Pamplona, Spain trying to evade stampeding bulls in the festival of San Fermin’s encierro, commonly called the Running of the Bulls. For the past few years, Starkville’s Maxwell Street has seen a July a stampede of its own.

During a lengthy board meeting Tuesday evening where Starkville aldermen failed to reach a consensus on some issues, they did manage to unanimously approve a letter of intent to further its negotiations with Cadence Bank to purchase its main branch downtown for use as Starkville Police Department headquarters.

After tornados ripped through Louisville on April 28, Mary Francis Wilson lost her house.

But she found something interesting, too.

Amongst the rubble and debris that lay in her yard, Wilson found a rather unexpected item — a wedding dress. But it wasn’t hers.

Suspects being sought in commercial burglary

Starkville Police Department is seeking suspects in an alleged commercial burglary of a riding lawn mower and portable generator over the weekend.

SPD says in a press release that officers responded to the report of burglary Monday, but the burglary reportedly happened between Friday afternoon and Monday morning at the Oktibbeha County Bus Shop at 220 Gillespie Street.

Mayor pressing issue on old SSD bond funds

Mayor Parker Wiseman plans to present a resolution to Starkville aldermen today that could bring an end to the city’s struggle with Starkville School District on how to handle a 1986 school bond for construction/renovation.

The board will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall courtroom.
