SPD investigating reported carjacking, sexual assault

The Starkville Police Department is seeking a male suspect in connection with a reported carjacking and sexual assault.
An SPD release said the incident reportedly occurred around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday night. No descriptions of the suspect were released by SPD. As of press time, no arrests had been made in the case.

MSU PD makes auto burglary arrests

The Mississippi State Police Department arrested three suspects on charges of auto burglary early Wednesday morning, Police Chief Vance Rice announced in a release.

Starkville name change to be revealed by city

In a move that sent shock waves through city hall, a measure to take steps to change the name of Starkville to Stark Vegas was approved last night by the city administration.
Mayor Parker Wiseman has called for a 4 p.m. press conference today to make an official announcement. A source close to the mayor confirmed the radical decision has been in the talking stages for months.

City breaks ground on Lynn Lane project

It took a nine years, but the city of Starkville finally broke ground on the Lynn Lane multi-use path project Tuesday afternoon.
The project is a planned $1.1 million path that will begin at McKee Park and run along Lynn Lane onto Mississippi State University.

Arts festival to host singer/songwriter showcase Thursday

Eleven songwriters will showcase their talents Thursday, competing for an opportunity to perform at the Cotton District Arts Festival on April 18.
Starkville Area Arts Council will host its first Singer/Songwriter Showcase beginning at 8 p.m. at Dave’s Dark Horse Tavern.

Legislature equalizes school millage for city, county: County officials concerned by state-mandated tax plan

Citizens of Starkville and Oktibbeha County will likely be paying the same tax rate for schools after the Mississippi Legislature passed a bill last week that creates an equal school millage rate for all Oktibbeha County citizens.

Board of Alderman names Yarbrough Fire Chief

The Starkville Board of Aldermen appointed Charles Yarbrough as Starkville Fire Chief effective immediately on a 4-3 vote after roughly 2.5 hours of interviews Monday evening.
Yarbrough, who previously served as SFD’s training officer, will succeed former chief Rodger Mann, who retired at the end of February after a 30-plus year career with the department.

Butler Talks tech at Rotary
