December 24th
The Starkville Yellowjackets have seen progress in the last three football seasons with Jamie Mitchell as coach.
After finishing with a 5-6 record and missing the playoffs in Mitchell's first season, the Jackets went 12-3 and lost to Picayune in the Class 5A State title game, then SHS completed the deal with a 28-11 victory over Pascagoula to bring the State title home.
The Starkville High Yellowjackets have one last Christmas gift for their basketball fans this week.
Beginning Wednesday and running through Friday, the Jackets will host the “Travis Outlaw Slam Dunk at the Hump” boys basketball tournament.
December 23rd
The Mississippi State football team is going to have good play at linebacker for some years to come.
There is freshman All-American Benardrick McKinney, junior Deontae Skinner, sophomore Ferlando Bohanna. Also true freshmen Richie Brown and Beniquez Brown are sitting out there first year on campus.
December 22nd
COLUMBUS – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers faced their second public school opponent of the Joe Horne Columbus Christmas Invitational in the form of the Lady Rams from Provine.
Heading into the game Lady Vols coach Glenn Schmidt knew her team was in for a battle, but her team rose to the challenge walking away with a 80-56 victory.
It was quite an impressive three days of basketball for the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers.
The way they took care of business at the Joe Horne Columbus Christmas Classic was especially noteworthy and worth the short drive over to Columbus to see.
After handling Noxubee County 75-31 on Friday, Starkville Academy came back with another strong effort on Saturday to defeat Provine 80-56.
COLUMBUS – The Starkville Yellowjackets were able to play three decent quarters of basketball against Holt, Ala., on Saturday afternoon at the Joe Horne Columbus Christmas Invitational.
When the game consists of four quarters, only showing up for three isn't good enough for the Jackets right now.
Many Mississippi State fans know quite a bit about the players on the field, but know little about the Bulldogs off the field.
For instance, punter Baker Swedenberg plays in a band.
Junior starting quarterback Tyler Russell spends most of his free time in the woods usually in a tree stand.
December 21st
Mississippi State freshman guard Fred Thomas was celebrating a State championship the last time he was in the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
The 6-foot-5, 191-pound Jackson native poured in 24 points and hit the game winning 3-point shot to lead Jim Hill to a 76-74 win over Tupelo and the Class 6A State championship.
COLUMBUS – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers stepped out of the norm and entered public school competition as they competed in the 16th annual Joe Horne Christmas Invitational.
On Friday, the Lady Volunteers picked up a convincing 75-31 victory over the Noxubee County Tigerettes.
COLUMBUS – The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets have already played some pretty good teams during the pre-Christmas part of the basketball season.
Meridian and Columbus are two squads that have made it difficult on Starkville.
On Friday afternoon, they faced perhaps the best.
