Young Mustangs look to put things together

October 23, 2013

Murrah High School football coach Zack Grady was presented a pretty tall task this season.
He was faced with having to replace 16 starters from last year's team.
As expected, there have been some growing pains for the Mustangs, who take records of 4-5 overall and 2-2 in Class 6A, Region 2 into Friday's home game at Newell Field against the Starkville Yellowjackets.

Next stop: State title series for East Webster softball

MABEN – East Webster and Enterprise treated fans to free softball on Tuesday evening.
With such evenly-matched teams, it was no surprise that game three of the Class 2A South State championship was a thriller. It came down to the bottom of the eighth, but East Webster pulled through to achieve a 6-5 victory in game three.

There are just not very many football teams out there playing very much defense anymore at any level.
Think about it. Doesn't it seem less and less likely these days to see shutouts in high school, junior college and college?
More and more offenses are putting up video game-like numbers in points and total yards.
It's not surprising to see squads scoring 50, 60 and 70 points in a game.

Wolverines kicker uses weight room to his advantage

Some kickers don't emphasize the importance of using the weight room to their advantage.
Those thoughts don't enter the mind of East Webster sophomore Tyler Cosby.
Cosby has steadily gotten better as a kicker for the Wolverines and he points to time spent in the weight room as a reason why.
"It's pretty crucial and helps me kick farther," Cosby said. "Overall it helps me stay in shape."

Familiar SEC East foe: MSU set to play host to Kentucky Thursday

Mississippi State's only constant from the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division is Kentucky.
The Bulldogs and Wildcats have been playing every year since 1990. During that span, MSU is 14-9 against UK.
Coach Dan Mullen took over the Bulldog program in 2009 and he is 4-0 against the Wildcats. 
With the Wildcats always being on the Bulldog schedule, Mullen views the game as a rivalry game.

Lowery finds triathlon success on world stage

One former Starkville resident is making quite the name for himself in the triathlon world.
A 1981 graduate of Starkville High School and a 1986 Mississippi State University graduate, Tom Lowery most recently competed in the ITU World Championships in London where he finished sixth in his age group (50-54) with a time of 1:10:38. Lowery’s time also made him the second-highest American finisher.

MSU's 'Meet the Players' event light-hearted atmosphere

It may have been Meet the Players night for the Mississippi State basketball programs Monday night at the Griffis Ballroom of the Palmeiro Center, but the participants joked and visited like everyone already knew each other.

East Webster hosts South State softball series

The East Webster Lady Wolverines are pretty familiar with their next opponent as they progress towards a berth in the state championship.
Tonight at 5 p.m., the Lady Wolverines welcome Enterprise to Cumberland for a best-of-three series to decide the Class 2A South State champion and who will ultimately play for the State championship.

After a week off and a Saturday away from football, Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen spoke to the media on Sunday afternoon.
