SMITH COLUMN: Renfroe off and running for Emeralds

The projection for former Mississippi State baseball player Hunter Renfroe to make the major leagues will be by 2015.
If he continues on the pace that he's shown to begin his professional career, don't expect it to be that long.
Renfroe has gotten off to a good start for the Eugene Emeralds in the San Diego Padres' organization. In his first two games, he has gotten four hits in seven at-bats.

Parks doesn't pass up an opportunity to coach

Jarrod Parks told himself that he was never going to coach, unless the right offer came along. 
The former Mississippi State Bulldog was released by the Los Angeles Angels organization last September. He returned to his hometown, Madison, where several coaching offers presented themselves.

No doubting Thomas: Young Starkville golfer heads to regional event

The United States Golf Association, the Masters Tournament Foundation and the Professional Golf Association of America have found a way to give young kids an opportunity to compete on the golf course.
It was announced this year during the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club that the three entities were going to be sponsoring the Drive Chip & Putt Championship.

Schaefer's AAU team plays for championship

It has been a busy summer for Starkville High School girls basketball player Blair Schaefer.
After winning the free-throw shooting contest and scoring 17 points for the North All-Stars in the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Game in Clinton on Monday, she turned her attention back to the Amateur Athletic Union Nationals in Orlando, Fla. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Hamilton anxious to help EMCC staff

East Mississippi Community College has a new face standing on the football sidelines this season.
A former Starkville Academy standout, Webb Hamilton has been hired to oversee the Lion’s linebackers as well as serving as the staff’s video coordinator.

Leland Mitchell: Devoted family man with heart

Former Mississippi State basketball player Leland Noyal Mitchell was remembered Thursday as being a devoted family man, friend and teammate who had a big heart.
A celebration of the life of Mitchell, who passed away last Saturday at the age of 72, was held at the Welch Funeral Home chapel.

Improvements being made at SA baseball field

There has been a little bit of construction going on at Starkville Academy and specifically at the baseball field.
According to head baseball coach Jody Britt, some much needed improvements to the field are being made.

Wetherbee lends expertise to MSU athletic department

Scott Wetherbee has never been in charge of media relations.
With that being said, the new Mississippi State senior associate athletic director for external affairs, understands what is driving media relations these days.
It's social media.
"Obviously, the big thing is technology and the changing of all of our social media platforms," Wetherbee said.

MSU team honored: 1963 squad recognized for 'Game of Change'

It has been over 50 years since the Mississippi State men's basketball team snuck out of Starkville and headed north.
On Tuesday, that 1963 MSU team was recognized by Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition and the Citizenship Education Fund at the 42nd Annual International Convention at the Chicago Hilton.

SMITH COLUMN: Mitchell one of the best for Bulldogs

Leland Mitchell was one of the best players ever to step onto the basketball court for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
