MSU hires Brewster to coach receivers

Mississippi State announced the departure of receivers coach Angelo Mirando on Sunday and it only took four days for head coach Dan Mullen to find his man as a replacement.

That man is former University of Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster.

Bulldogs start volleyball season with matches at home

The Mississippi State football and volleyball programs have something in common this year.

Before the Bulldogs open with the Jackson State Tigers on the gridiron at Davis Wade Stadium on Sept. 1, the volleyball version steps onto the court at Newell-Grissom Building Friday night against the same school.

Madison Central Bobby Hall didn't hide in the preseason what he wanted to do offensively.

"We've got a quarterback that can throw the ball and we've got receivers that can catch it," Hall said. "We've got a lot of speed, so you'll definitely see us throwing the football."

That strategy almost worked for the Jaguars in the season-opener against defending Class 6A champion Olive Branch.

Proper step forward: Lady Vols pick up first win of season

The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers put an end to a four-game soccer losing streak and earned its first victory of the season by defeating the Washington School Generals Tuesday 6-0 at the Starkville Sportsplex.

The win came on SA head coach Robert Gardner’s birthday and puts their record at 1-4 for the season.

Barber leads, teaches SA

Starkville Academy's Mary Austin Barber's senior year on the diamond has been one filled with a lot of emotion and opportunities for her to lead and teach.

The Lady Volunteers fell 13-2 to Heritage Academy Tuesday afternoon at Lady Volunteer Field.

Barber started in the circle for the Lady Vols and saw a 7th grader play in her usual shortstop spot.

Jackson ready for action: Senior offensive lineman has developed his skills

Gabe Jackson has been at Mississippi State for three years and has used that time wisely to develop his skills as an offensive lineman.

The junior hailing from Liberty comes into the season being selected for the Outland Trophy watch list and the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list. He has also received All-Southeastern Conference second team from numerous sources.

BREAKING NEWS: MSU announces Mirando resigns

Mississippi State is gearing up for the 2012 football season and with 13 days remaining before the opening kickoff, the Bulldogs announced the resignation of Angelo Mirando.

Mirando, who served as the MSU receivers coach last season, indicated personal reasons was the cause for his departure from the program.

The rains passed through the Starkville area on Saturday afternoon just in time for coach Dan Mullen and his Mississippi State Bulldogs to hold their final scrimmage of fall camp.

The end result was a satisfied head coach.

Softball win excites Lady Vols: Starkville Academy edges Washington

The Starkville Academy softball team had seen its share of losses this season, but Saturday they finally had something to celebrate.

The Lady Volunteers beat Washington School 5-4 in four innings in the 10th annual College Exposure Tournament at the Starkville Sportsplex for their first win.
