These are good times to be a former Starkville High School quarterback.

Jaquez Johnson is having an outstanding season so far with the East Mississippi Community College Lions, while Brad Henderson, a former signal caller with the Yellowjackets and Lions, has enjoyed some good moments at Northwestern State.

From the moment head basketball coach Rick Ray set foot on the Mississippi State campus, he knew he has his work cut out for him to rebuild a proud basketball program.

Void of veteran leadership, Ray began to cultivate Jalen Steele and Wendell Lewis into the cornerstones in which he would begin to build the program around.

There are a few college football teams across the nation that can claim to be undefeated at this point of the season.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are one of those.

After Saturday night's 30-10 victory over South Alabama, MSU stands 4-0 for the first time since 1999 and moved up in both polls on Sunday.

Unblemished September Bulldogs see first 4-0 mark since 1999

Not since 1999 have the Mississippi State Bulldogs opened the season a perfect 4-0, but on Saturday night, that’s exactly what Dan Mullen’s team did with a 30-10 win over South Alabama.

After a slow start, the Bulldog offense got going in the second quarter thanks to a LaDarius Perkins 44-yard scoring run to break the ice and give State the early 7-0 lead.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs needed to get refocused and ready.

At least that's the way analyst from ESPN radio saw the situation on Saturday morning.

After MSU escaped Troy last week with a 30-24 victory, there were many across the country that were anxious to see whether its newly achieved No. 23 ranking in The Associated Press and USA Today polls was deserved.

Banks inches closer to MSU interception record

Mississippi State senior defensive back Johnthan Banks inched one step closer to becoming the career interception leader at the school Saturday night.

The former East Webster High School player is within one pick of tying the all-time interception record of 16 held by Walt Harris.

Jackets begin region schedule strong

JACKSON – It turned out to be an easy Class 5A, Region 2, District 6 opener for the Starkville High School Yellowjackets.

After beginning the season with a 1-3 record against tough non-division competitive, Starkville went on the road to defeat the Jackson Lanier Bulldogs 48-0 on Friday night.

Vols unable to overcome talented Pats

The Starkville Academy Volunteers may have been an underdog in Friday night's matchup with Jackson Prep.

Starkville Academy’s head coach Jeff Terrill talked to his team before the game about how the Volunteers wanted to play the game.

“We need to play our football,” Terrill said. “We need to play hard, fundamental football.”

East Oktibbeha loses on the road

COLUMBUS – For the East Oktibbeha Titans, the road to the playoffs just got a lot harder.

The Titans fell to Class A, Region 3, District 4 rival West Lowndes 14-0 Friday night at Panther Field.

The Titans are now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the district, while the Panthers improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in district play.
