Starkville holds a special place in Smith's heart

May 26, 2015

Milton Smith is Starkville through and through.
The new Starkville High School Athletic Director won a state title in football and baseball as a player with the Yellowjackets in 1984 and 1986 respectively.
After high school, he stayed in Oktibbeha County and attended Mississippi State where he played football for the Bulldogs.

SMITH ON SPORTS: Smith, Woods return home to help SHS

May 26, 2015

Tuesday was not just about announcing a new football coach and new athletic director at Starkville High School.
It was treated more like a homecoming, and the Yellowjackets sure know how to throw a party.

Rain or shine: Oktibbeha County remembers fallen soldiers

May 25, 2015

Intermittent rains and steady, rolling thunder couldn’t dampen spirits as dozens of people turned out at Oktibbeha County Courthouse on Memorial Day to honor America’s fallen soldiers.
The Greater Starkville Development Partnership’s Military Affairs Committee hosted the service, which has been held annually since 2003.

Brown gets attention with play for Jackets

May 25, 2015

Few teams had the fire power of an offense mixed in with suffocating defense quite like Starkville High School in 2014.
The Yellowjackets cruised through their regular season before slipping up late against South Panola in the Class 6A North State championship, and a game away from playing for it all.

Young football players develop at East Webster

May 25, 2015

It was a challenging spring for East Webster football coach Doug Wilson.
Instead of having his full team out in practice, he was missing 20 players. The reason was a good one.
The Wolverine baseball team won the Class 2A State championship this past Saturday and there were 20 football players who had a hand in the title run.

SHS, SA begin summer baseball league action

May 25, 2015

Tyler Barnes became an example of what can happen when summer baseball is taken seriously.
Barnes earned a spot on the field for the Starkville Yellowjackets and had an All-Star caliber senior season.
He led the Jackets with 31 hits, nine doubles and 27 RBI, was second on the team with a .344 batting average and made the NEMCABB All-Star Game roster.

Wolverines battle way to the Class 2A baseball title

May 24, 2015

It was only human nature for East Webster head coach Wes Johnson to be slightly concerned coming into Saturday’s winner-take-all state championship game in Class 2A.
The long-time coach had probably seen it before. A young team lets an emotional loss linger and affect its play moving forward.

Edwards likes look of Eupora's front line

May 24, 2015

Stephen Edwards didn't become the head football coach of the Eupora Eagles to change everything.
Eupora was successful during the tenure of Junior Graham and Edwards doesn't anticipate doing very much different.
Spring practice was run pretty much the same for the Eagles, but with the youth of the squad, new faces do exist.

WAIT ON MSU: Howland gives MSU fans reason to pack the Hump

May 24, 2015

Football season may be right around the corner, but new Mississippi State men's basketball coach Ben Howland has some Bulldog fans ready to fill Humphrey Coliseum.
Howland took over the MSU program in March and since then, he has won a couple of battles on the recruiting trail.
