Excel By 5 named Oktibbeha County as a “Certified Early Childhood Community” on Friday, culminating two and a half years of effort from the county’s Excel By 5 coalition to make the county a better place for families to raise young children.

County school board OKs budget proposal

The Oktibbeha County School District Board unanimously approved the proposed school district budget for the 2012-13 school year at its special call meeting Monday.

The budget has a total projected revenue of $11,223,915.96, $2,838.96 more than the 2011-12 budget of $11,221,077.

HPC clears funds, but rules are still not complete yet

The Starkville Historic Preservation Commission approved payment for the writer of “Standards for Starkville’s Historic Districts” at its meeting Tuesday, but after discussing several remaining changes desired, the commission did not hold a vote to approve a final draft.

Homes, church go before zone board

The Starkville Planning and Zoning Commission will hear a final plat approval request for a new phase of Huntington Park and hold a public hearing on repurposing a Whitfield Road commercial building as a place of worship at its meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

Federal changes coming to local school cafeterias

President Barack Obama may have signed the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act into law in 2010, but the act is not yet in full effect.

Beverly Lowry, director of child nutrition for the Starkville School District, said the legislation only entered its implementation phase this year. Training on the new regulations was not available until July, she said.

MSU students care for tiger cubs in South Africa

Right now Starkville resident and Mississippi State University student Jake Read is just outside of Port Elizabeth, South Africa providing care to tiger and lion cubs.

His unique opportunity to take a two-week trip to the country was provided through GoEco, a volunteer organization established in 2005.
