Tigers swat Yellowjackets: SHS presented several chances, miscues hamper

Clash of the Titans quickly became the affectionate term for Friday's Class 6A North Half Championship contest between No. 1 Starkville Yellowjackets and No. 2 South Panola.
In the end, it was just that as late game fireworks propelled the Tigers to a 36-26 victory and a spot in the Class 6A State championship.

Outstanding year for Starkville team comes to an end

The Starkville Yellowjackets knew they had what it took to be a good football team back in August.
When Starkville went out and dominated Noxubee County 51-19 in the first game of the season, everyone else found out just how good the Jackets could be.
SHS quarterback Brady Davis and his teammates handled a team that turns out will play for the Class 4A State championship next week.

Calhoun City beats East Webster 35-14

CALHOUN CITY – The East Webster Wolverines have been a different team since losing to Calhoun City in the regular season.
East Webster dropped a 44-18 decision to the Wildcats on Oct. 10, but rattled off five-straight wins since then, including three playoff victories.
It didn't matter to the Wildcats.

MSU's Lewis battles through tough adversity

Jameon Lewis' junior season really put his name on the map.
The Mississippi State wide receiver had 64 catches for 923 yards and five touchdowns during the 2013 season. He helped lead the Bulldogs to a win over Rice in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and a 7-6 overall record.
This season hasn't turned out like Lewis has hoped.

It's not only the game of the week, but pretty much the game of the year.
When the Starkville Yellowjackets host the South Panola Tigers tonight, the two best teams in the biggest classification in Mississippi this season face each other. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Jackets have been ranked No. 1 overall and in Class 6A for most of the season, while the Tigers have come in at No. 2.

Wolverines excited about the chance of playing Wildcats

A sense of community is a big thing at East Webster.
For the Wolverines, it is more about playing for the name on the front of the jersey than the one on the back and as the team prepares to face Calhoun City in the Class 2A North Half State Championship, that mentality has not wavered.

The Bulldogs play in the Corpus Christi Coastal Challenge today and Saturday. MSU (4-0) opens play with St. Louis (3-1) today at 8:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.

Coach Lance Pogue said there is one thing down through the years that has made his South Panola Tigers successful.
"You've got to protect the ball, obviously play good defense and find a way to run the ball some this time of year," Pogue told WFCA-FM radio last week.
