Mullen counts on leaders to keep Bulldogs focused

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen didn't want to be the one to get his players in the right mindset for Monday's practice.
The Bulldogs are coming off a bye and three-straight wins over top 10 teams that pole-vaulted them to No. 1 in both major polls.
MSU returned to practice Monday in advance of this Saturday's game in Lexington, Kent., against the Kentucky Wildcats.

Lady Jackets to host first round of volleyball playoffs

All season long, Lauren Love’s Starkville Lady Yellowjackets have been playing with one thing in the back of its mind.
That idea comes front and center today as SHS welcomes the Clinton Arrows for the first round of Class III playoff action.

SHS boys second, girls third at Class 6A North State swim meet

The Starkville High School Yellowjacket and Lady Jacket teams performed well in the Class 6A North State championship held over the weekend in Flowood.
The Jackets placed second behind Tupelo, in a tie with Clinton and Oxford, even after much adversity. The Lady Jackets placed third behind Madison Central (first) and Tupelo (second).   

Huddleston's commitment to MSU earns her more minutes

Tiffany Huddleston is considered "a great teammate" by Mississippi State soccer coach Aaron Gordon and teammates.
It's her willingness to do anything it takes to help the Bulldogs that causes the people around to stand up and take notice.
With MSU limited due to injury, Huddleston, a former Starkville Academy athlete, played 38 minutes on Sunday against Texas A&M.

Young Bulldogs see 'progress' this season

Mississippi State's young soccer team welcomed the No. 8 team in the country to Starkville and didn't back down from the challenge.
Even though the Bulldogs, who only have one senior on the roster, lost a 3-0 decision to Texas A&M, they did not allow the Aggies a goal in the second half.

MSU shows no quit in a loss to Missouri

There was no quit in the Mississippi State volleyball team on Sunday.
The Bulldogs found themselves down two sets to one, but won the fourth set 25-22 to force a decisive fifth set with defending Southeastern Conference champion Missouri. The Bulldogs led 11-8, but couldn't hold the lead as the Tigers won the final set 15-12 to take the match 3-2.

Fatherhood brings joy to Smith

Preston Smith shows a smile when asked about winning the Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week three straight times.
His face lights up in a different way when asked about something else.
The Mississippi State defensive end became a father last December, and it's obvious that she means more to him than football.

Vols continue work during open date

Football might not have taken place on J.E. Logan Field Friday evening, but that has not stopped the Volunteers from working hard.
"During the bye week, we focus on sharpening fundamentals and getting some people well," Starkville Academy coach Jeff Terrill said. "This really couldn't have come at a better time."

Lady Jackets win SHS Invitational

Sometimes preparation for a cross country meet brings with it some sweat and some tears.
On Saturday, Starkville High School runner Shanika Musser was all smiles.
Musser was able edge Tupelo's Savannah Hudgins right at the finish line to secure 13th place and provide valuable points for her team.
