Miller contributes to Hinds Community College success

The Hinds Community College women's soccer team has another opportunity for success in the postseason Saturday.

Starkville native Morgan Miller is right in the middle of it.

The former Starkville High School player has contributed to a team that has a 12-3 record at this point of the season. The Lady Eagles host Holmes in the final regular season match tonight.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs passed their first big test of the 2012 season on Saturday.

It was more like a midterm exam.

The No. 19 Mississippi State Bulldogs entered Saturday night with many doubters wondering just how good this team actually was.

Today MSU stands a perfect 6-0 after defeating Tennessee 41-31 in front of a packed house of 57,831 at Davis Wade Stadium.

Freshmen were making their presence felt early for the Mississippi State Bulldogs during Saturday night's game against the Tennessee Volunteers.

The 10-yard touchdown run by MSU redshirt running back Josh Robinson in the first quarter was the first of his career.

Mississippi State junior quarterback Tyler Russell had an outstanding night at Davis Wade Stadium leading his team to a 41-31 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers.

Lady Jackets suffer playoff loss

The Starkville High School volleyball team looked like it was in a good position to advance.

The Lady Yellowjackets took the first set, but Center Hill regained momentum to take the next three sets and won a 3-1 decision in the Division II playoffs Saturday in the Beehive.

SHS opened the match with a 25-19 win. The Lady Mustangs took the second set 25-5 and shifted the momentum their way.

Homecoming answer: Volunteers get back on track with 41-7 win

The answers for the Starkville Academy Volunteers were all positive during homecoming on Friday night.

After SA took a 20-0 lead in its game against rival Winston Academy, the visiting Patriots hit a big play with a 76-yard touchdown run by Orien Daily to cut into that margin a bit.

Yellowjackets claim 42-0 victory on road

CANTON – The Starkville High School Yellowjackets remained unbeaten in Class 5A, Region 2, District 6 play with a 42-0 shutout of the Canton Tigers on Friday night.

SHS tailback Preston Baker rushed for 133 yards and a score as the Jackets stand at the top of the region standings.

Eupora tops Ackerman

EUPORA – The Ackerman Indians were about to deliver the knockout punch.

Derrick Jones intercepted a pass and took it back 90 yards late in the second quarter to start a rally and Eupora scored 15 unanswered points to win 22-18 Friday night in a Class 2A, Region 2, District 4 game at Wafford Field.

West Oktibbeha belts West Lowndes

MABEN – The West Oktibbeha Timberwolves continued their journey to a possible region title by knocking off West Lowndes 44-8.

“Our guys got off to slow start (Friday night),” West Oktibbeha coach Adam Lowrey said. “They overcame adversity in the second half. As the game progressed, the tempo picked up, we found our rhythm and ultimately we took care of business.”
