Baker has ankle sprain for SHS

The Starkville Yellowjackets needed to hear some good news during their open week.

On Monday, the Jackets got it concerning running back Preston Baker.

Baker, the leading receiver and second-leading rusher for the Jackets, suffered what initially looked like a severe injury to his lower leg in last Friday's 47-22 loss to West Point.

With the pee-wee league in existence for a few seasons now, Starkville Academy's coaches like what it has provided for elementary-aged boys.

He knew in order to have any success this season, there had to be some younger Eagles to contribute and the seniors had to lead.

Eupora's special teams leads to great beginning

EUPORA – Junior Graham has been a head coach for 24 years, and in those 24 seasons he has seen several teams start at 4-0.

This year he has his Eupora Eagles off to that record.

The Class 2A Eagles have outscored their opponents 120-45 and have not allowed more than 13 points in a single game.

Eupora's special teams is one of the main reasons it has been able to get off to a hot start.

SMITH COLUMN: Letdown not what Bulldogs need this week

There's one word that the Mississippi State Bulldogs don't want to have anything to do with this week – letdown.

After defeating the Auburn Tigers 28-10 in its Southeastern Conference opener, it will be easy for overconfidence to set in at MSU. That doesn't need to happen.

Lady Jackets finding form at division time

The Starkville High School volleyball team is finding its form at the right time in the season.

The Lady Yellowjackets knocked off division foe Callaway 3-0 Tuesday night at the Beehive.

SHS improved its overall record to 11-11 and 2-0 in district play.

"This was a big win," SHS head coach Lauren Love said. "Callaway is athletic and they play a fast-paced match."

East Webster beats Eupora in 8 innings

MABEN – With the game tied at 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Madison Flemmings walked to the plate.

She delivered a single up the middle to score Mamie Hollenhead and the East Webster softball team beat Eupora 9-8 in eight innings in district game.

The Lady Wolverines (11-2) entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 5-3. Autumn Frost hit a 2-run home run to tie the game.

MSU remains fourth after day two

WEST POINT – Mississippi State remains in fourth placed after two rounds of the inaugural Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational with a 598 team total.

The Lady Bulldogs stand at 22-over par which ranks among the best 36-hole totals in the programs history.
Additionally, State stands just 10 shots behind Southeastern Conference foe Kentucky.

During Mullen’s weekly address to the media on Monday, he explained the need for his team to be able to handle a situation it has never faced - learning how to play when you’re having success.

Lady Bulldogs stand in fourth place after day one

WEST POINT – The Mississippi State Lady Bulldog golf team remains in the hunt as it opens play in the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational.

MSU fired a 297 during the first round which was good enough for fourth place after day one.

The 9-over par team total was the fifth-lowest open round ever for the Lady Bulldogs.
