Off to good start: Starkville 12-year-olds win first game of state tourney

The Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars couldn't have asked for a better start to the Dizzy Dean North State Tournament on Friday.
After taking an early 4-0 lead, Starkville hammered Southaven American for two more innings to take a 15-1 victory.

A sixth-inning rally by the Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars fell just short in their second game of the day as they lost a 6-5 decision to Grenada Youth at the Dizzy Dean North State Tournament.
Starkville jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, but saw Grenada Youth come back with four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to get all of the runs it needed.

Mathiston 12-year-olds defeated by Magnolia Youth

Magnolia Youth from Water Valley was able to take a lead in the first inning and keep it in a 7-4 win over Mathiston in the final game to finish of eight on the first day of the Dizzy Dean 12-year-old North State Tournament.
After scoring 21 runs in an earlier 21-8 victory over Horn Lake, Magnolia Youth proved it had a little bit left in the tank to get its second triumph of the day.

Stricklin challenged Kansas State Athletic Director John Currie to a #Chillin4Charity water dumping stunt on Twitter earlier this week.
Currie accepted the challenge and then threw out his own challenge.

Going on the road for tournament play can be a negative at times.
For the Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars, that is something they don't have to worry about this weekend.
Although it's considered a treat to be able to go out of town and be able to eat at other places and swimming in the hotel pool, it can also be considered a hindrance to the real reason the teams are in a particular place.

Starkville High School will be taking its brand of football across the state line this season.
In a move that was approved by the Starkville School District Board of Trustees at Tuesday's monthly meeting, the Yellowjackets will be playing a game at Florence, Ala., on Sept. 19.

Starkville 8-year-olds are prepared

Action has been steady for the Starkville 8-year-old All-Stars.
Over the last couple of weeks, the team has participated in two warm-up tournaments as they prepare to take part in this weekend’s Dizzy Dean State Tournament in West Point.
In both tournaments, Starkville came in second to a very strong Columbus team and in the most recent took their opponents right down to the wire.

Baseball season is in full swing in Starkville.
After a successful regular season, the 10-year-old All-Stars are busy playing and preparing for this weekend’s Dizzy Dean State Tournament in Eupora.
“We have been practicing and playing tournaments and having an overall good time,” Starkville coach T.J. Kent said. “We open our state tournament (today) at 1:30 playing Grenada.”
