The funeral for Adelaide J. Elliott will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at Rockhill United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Rockhill Cemetery. The Rev. Jerome Wilson will officiate.
Visitation will be held today from noon to 6 p.m. at West Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a family hour from 6 to 7 p.m. West Memorial Home is handing the arrangements.
Ms. Elliott was born Sept.12, 1921 in Oktibbeha County to the late Brister and Katie Elliott. She passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at OCH Regional Medical Center. She was 88 years old.
She graduated from Oktibbeha County Training School. She received an associateâ€™s degree from Mary Holmes Junior College and received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Jackson State University.
She was a life member of the NAACP, a Sunday School teacher, Chancel Choir member,Â participated in the march on Washington in 1963, an elementary school teacher for 48 Years, member of theÂ National Education Association, Order of Eastern Star, president of the Home Benefit Society, resident of United Methodist Women, and a civil rights activist.Â
She leaves to cherish her memories three sisters, Sallie Gearring and Henrene Averitt, both of Merrillville, Ind., and Wilda Richards of East Chicago, Ill.; brother, Hortense Elliott of East Chicago, Ind.; godsons, the Rev. Bernard Crump, the Rev. David McCoy, Alvin Barnes, Winslow Poe, Curtis Watson and Buster Collier; and goddaughters, Alveria Crump, Gloria Bishop, Shirley Franklin and Joella Shields.
