Arts council awards grants to area schools

Area schools have received more than $5,030 in grants for the 2016-2017 school year.

Classroom grants of up to $200 are being awarded to classroom teachers for projects affecting only one class, and general grants up to $500 are being awarded for projects affecting several classes, an entire school or that may affect students for several years. Any faculty member or administrator was eligible to apply for the grants.

Money for the grants comes from several events held by the arts council including its gala, Forks and Corks and the Cotton District Arts Festival.
Teachers and programs in the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District, at Starkville Academy and at Starkville Christian School. Programs receiving funds ranged from writing programs to school musicals to ceramics classes.

Grant applications for the 2017-2018 school year will be accepted from Sept. 18 to Oct. 17. Recipients will be announced in December.
