August sales tax collections remain level
Starkville’s sales tax collections for August virtually match those for the same month in 2009, the latest figures from the Mississippi Tax Commission show.
The city saw $458,004.27 in sales tax revenues for August 2010. The level is a slight drop from August 2009, which saw $458,061.08 collected — a difference of 56.81.
Starkville’s sales tax collections for the first eight months of 2010 are more than $135,000 above what was collected for the same period in 2009, according to the latest figures reported by the Tax Commission.
It takes the Tax Commission two months to process the revenues and report back the collections to municipalities.
City officials received the latest tax figures this week.
For the first eight months of 2010, the city has seen $3,494,443.28 in sales tax collected as compared to the $3,358,523.46 collected for the same period in 2009 — an increase of $135,919.82.
Six of the first eight months of 2010 saw increases in sales tax collection as compared to the same months in 2009 with the exception of February and July of this year, which were down a little over $2,000 in collections as compared to the same months 2009.
The sales tax collections from January to August saw a monthly average of $436,805.41, while tax collections for all of 2009 saw a monthly average of $427,479.76.
Revenues from the 2 percent restaurant and hotel tax have also held steady and have seen incremental growth for the first seven months of this year.
Collections for August of this year, however, saw a marked drop from 2009. For August 2010, local hotels and restaurants collected $118,022.29 in 2 percent tax revenues as compared to $136,804.23 for August 2009 — a decrease of 18,781.94, or 13.73 percent.
However, the combined 2 percent tax revenues from January to August 2010 show a marked increase.
The 2 percent tax collections for the first eight months of the year total $923,639.14, as compared to the $876,863.40 collected for the same period for 2009 — an increase of 46,775.74.
The first eight months of 2010 have seen a monthly average of $115,454.89 in 2 percent tax collections. For 2009, the monthly average was $110,173.07.
The 2 percent tax revenues are split among the Starkville Convention and Visitors Bureau (15 percent), the Starkville Parks and Recreation Department (40 percent), the city (10 percent), the Oktibbeha County Economic Development Authority (15 percent) and Mississippi State University (20 percent).
