Updated Flu Clinic schedule announced

The Student Health Center is encouraging everyone to get a flu shot this year. The cost for the flu shot is $20 cash or check. Students also have the option to charge the shot to their student account. The following clinics are currently set up:
• Today — Barnes & Noble Welcome Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Thursday — Dorman Hall, Room 321, 9 a.m. to noon
• Thursday — Sanderson Center Conference Room, 1 to 4 p.m.
• Nov. 10 — Lee Hall, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Nov. 17 — McArthur Hall, Room 421, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Additional clinics may be added at a later date. Please check the schedule at http://www.health.msstate.ed/healthecenter for updates.

MAFES Store to offer holiday treats this weekend

The MAFES Sales Store will participate in the 2010 Starkville Christmas Open House event this weekend. The store will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It is located in the glass annex at the front of the Herzer Food Science Building on 925 Stone Blvd.
Offering items such as Edam cheese, jellies, cider, and peanuts, the MAFES Sales Store (also called the MSU Cheese Store) is a unit of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.
The store exists as an outlet for the research and educational products produced by MAFES Research Support Unit Dairy Manufacturing Plant and by the Department of Food Science, Nutrition, and Health Promotion.

Nominations under way for honorary doctoral degrees

Nominations for honorary doctoral degrees to be awarded by Mississippi State at the spring commencement ceremony are being accepted until January 14, 2011. Nominations, including supporting materials, should be sent to the Honorary Degree Committee in care of the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President.
The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning authorized state universities to begin awarding the degrees in 1999 and generally allows each institution to give up to two each year. Mississippi State has awarded 17 honorary degrees to date.
Under IHL guidelines, persons eligible for the doctor of laws, doctor of science, doctor of humane letters, doctor of creative and performing arts, or doctor of public service must have demonstrated nationally-recognized, sustained achievement in scholarship, public service, creative and performing arts, or professional activity.
Faculty, staff, and administrators of the university, and elected or appointed public officials are ineligible for an honorary degree until one year after leaving their position. Candidates for public office also are ineligible.
Those who are eligible to submit nominations are MSU faculty, staff, students, and alumni. All information that nominators wish to present to the Honorary Degree Committee should be provided along with the nomination by the deadline.
The Honorary Degree Committee will evaluate nominations, develop additional information about nominees, and verify information submitted.
The committee will recommend to the President candidates for degrees to be presented at April 2011 commencement ceremonies.
The state College Board must approve honorary degrees at least two months prior to their announcement. Names of nominees will be kept confidential until they are approved.
Prior recipients of honorary degrees at Mississippi State are John H. Bryan Jr., former chairman of the board and CEO of Sara Lee Corp.; Leo W. Seal Jr., chairman and CEO of Hancock Bank in Gulfport; Harry Charles F. Simrall, MSU dean of engineering until his retirement in 1978; Dave C. Swalm, retired petroleum products company owner; G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery, former 3rd District congressman from Meridian; Hunter Henry, retired Dow Chemical Co. executive; Bobby Martin, president of The Peoples Bank in Ripley; Jack Cristil, radio play by play announcer for MSU football and basketball games for more than 50 years; Charles B. Cliett, head emeritus of the aerospace engineering department; Hartley D. Peavey, owner and CEO of Peavey Electronics in Meridian; James Worth Bagley, chairman and CEO of the Lam Research Corp.; Will D. Carpenter, retired vice president and general manager, New Products Division, Monsanto Company; Myrna Colley Lee, acclaimed theatrical designer; William G. Riley, Meridian physician and philanthropist; Fred E. Carl, Jr., founder of the Viking Range Corp.; Richard C. Adkerson, president and CEO of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.; and Bobby S. Shackouls, retired chairman, president, and CEO of Burlington Resources, Inc.

Those participating in Fall Commencement should make sure to contact Barnes & Noble at MSU before Nov. 19 to order your graduation regalia.
Please be aware that graduation fees paid to the MSU Registrar do not include the cost of cap and gown rentals. Students must contact the bookstore directly to reserve your cap and gown.

MSU photography exhibition continues

The MSU Welcome Center is hosting an exhibition of photographs of various buildings and landmarks at Mississippi State taken by Dr. Mark Reed daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the second floor gallery of the Cullis Wade Depot. The exhibition will run through 5 p.m. Nov. 10. Call 325-2320 for more information.

MSU Post Office has Breast Cancer research stamp

Through the end of October, the MSU Post Office, along with the U.S. Postal Service, is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month through the sale of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp.
Now denominated at 55 cents, it was the first semipostal stamp in U.S. history, meaning that the remaining amount not ascribed for First Class postage payment is earmarked for this designated fund.
Since its original issue date of July 29, 1998, the Breast Cancer Stamp has raised more than $70 million for breast cancer research.
For every one purchased, 11 cents goes toward research to find a cure. Visit the MSU Post Office and purchase these stamps through the end of the month. Join the fight to find a cure.

‘Formatting Theses and Dissertation’ workshop offered

The Instructional Media Center at Mitchell Memorial Library will sponsor a workshop on “Formatting Theses and Dissertation” from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday in the Giles Classroom in Mitchell Memorial Library.
Authors can easily become lost in the many guidelines encountered as they prepare their theses or dissertations, but Word can help. Following the formatting requirements of the MSU Office of Graduate Studies’ “Guidelines for Preparing Dissertations and Theses,” this workshop is designed for both first-time and experienced authors.
Let Word handle the formatting so you can focus on the most important part: the content. This workshop also covers how to convert Word documents to PDF for easy submission. It is co-sponsored by the Electronic Theses and Dissertations Unit and the Instructional Media Center. For more information, contact Stephanie Agnew at 325-8867.

Bruce Cohen poetry reading Scheduled

Bruce Cohen, the author of two books of poetry, will read his works from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the Fowlkes Auditorium on the third floor of the Colvard Student Union.
His work has appeared in The Georgia Review, The Harvard Review, The Indiana Review, and elsewhere. The reading is sponsored by the Department of English.

Volleyball team to play Kentucky, Tenn.

The Mississippi State volleyball team will play Kentucky from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Newell-Grissom Building.
The volleyball team will play Tennessee from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Newell-Grissom Building.

Summer Program in Spain meeting

The Study Abroad Office will sponsor an informational meeting about the Summer Program in Spain from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 220 in Lee Hall.
The meeting will include a description of the program, cost and requirements and a question and answer session.
