Celebrating Grandparents Day at WOCES with a special workshop focused on a healthy lifestyle

September 19, 2010

West Oktibbeha Count Elementary celebrated grandparents Friday morning with a workshop focused on health.
Though Grandparents Day is traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, workshop coordinator Mary Carr still felt it important to recognize the special relationship between children and grandparents.
“We knew it was Grandparents Day this month, but since we couldn’t do something on the actual day, we wanted to have a workshop and still recognize our grandparents,” Carr explained.
Roughly 40 grandparents packed the library for a workshop focused on ways to stay healthy. Pam Perry’s kindergarten class kicked off the event with a song. Golden Triangle area Agency on Aging Director Bobby Gann was the guest speaker for the event. He spoke about the services offered through the agency, like meal services, and how elderly citizens can benefit from those services.
Representatives from OCH Regional Medical Center were present to offer free blood sugar and blood pressure screening, both of which are essential for a healthy life.
“A lot of grandparents have illnesses, and we wanted to provide them with information on how to stay healthy,” Carr said. “The more information we give them, the more they’ll catch on and pass that information on to the next person.”
Each grandparent was given a workshop booklet full of articles on ways to stay healthy like low-fat cooking tips, ten tips to control blood pressure and five foods for a better mood.
Grandparent Diane Bush attended the workshop and said she was pleased with the amount of pertinent information it provided.
“I think it’s wonderful and inviting,” she said. “I’m happy about the nice turn out and the helpful information.”
