The Mississippi State Women’s Basketball program is no stranger to recognition, but a recent honor was bestowed to show the team just how valuable it is to the community.

Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman on Wednesday met the team at half court at Humphrey Coliseum to read a proclamation in honor of the program for the upcoming weekend.

After pausing for a photo with head coach Vic Schaefer, Wiseman declared March 17-19 to be "Mississippi State Women’s Basketball Weekend" in the city of Starkville.

The team finished with a 29-4 record overall, 13-3 in SEC play, and won a bid to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Wiseman commended the team, saying the success was made possible by long hours of practice and many contributions both on and off the court.

Schaefer thanked Wiseman and said his team would try to make it a weekend for everybody.

“We are top 10 in the country in attendance, but No.1 in how our community embraces these young ladies,” Schaefer said. “As their head coach, I want you to know we appreciate that.”
