FULTON – Former Starkville Academy athlete Will Goodwin wears two sports hats at Itwamba Community College.
After signing a soccer scholarship to play with the Indians, Goodwin wanted to do more for the athletic program.
Goodwin contacted new ICC football coach Jon Williams and asked to try out for the team.
"He was a relative unknown to us and of course, we get a lot of requests from players wanting to walk on," Williams said. "Will just humbled himself and said, 'Coach I'm just looking for a chance. I'm already coming to play soccer and I'd like to do both.' To be honest, he was about one of two or three at the whole tryout that we had an interest in."
The only problem was that the Indians had signed a kicker out of Ackerman in Nolan Long so Goodwin's role wasn't defined initially.
Goodwin kept working during the summer and the ICC coaching staff felt more inclined to find a place for him on the field. With such a strong leg, Williams wanted to at least use Goodwin as the punter and on kickoffs.
Williams said Goodwin has the ability to "turn the field for us as a punter" and that his kickoffs often reached the end zone with little opportunity for a return by the opponent.
Then two weeks ago, Long decided to quit the team and Goodwin was handed all of the kicking responsibilities.
Goodwin will begin performing his services in Fulton tonight when the Indians take on Hinds Community College.
"We're tickled to death to have him," Williams said. "He's a great kid and he's one of the greatest competitors that I've been around. He wants to win and from talking to the soccer coach, he has that same mentality on the soccer field. I know he's one of the standout players for our soccer team and we certainly believe he will be a standout player for us as well."
On Tuesday, Itawamba's soccer team lost a tough 2-1 decision to Union University, but Goodwin had an assist on the only goal scored by the Indians by Hil Fradenburg.
Goodwin didn't return phone messages left on his cell phone, but Williams said there has been no conflict between the two seasons going on at the same time.
As far as practice, there's the use of a golf cart called "the lemo" to get Goodwin from one training site to the other.
"Will gets picked up by one of the managers in the cart and take him to soccer," Williams said. "The soccer coach has been awesome about sharing him. He leaves the soccer field, comes over, we drive him on the field. We are there ready to roll and we have it all timed out perfectly."
