GSDP accepting award nominations

The Greater Starkville Development Partnership is currently accepting nominations for the T.E. Veitch Community Service Award and the R. Clay Simmons Exemplary Enterprise Award.

Award winners will be honored at the Partnership Annual Banquet on Jan. 30.

The T.E. Veitch Community Service Award dates back to 1979 and is a prestigious award given annually by the GSDP to recognize community service and outstanding civic contributions to Starkville and Oktibbeha County.

"The award is given to an individual who is committed to involvement in community affairs and enhancing our community," GSDP Director of Tourism Jennifer Prather said.

To be considered for the award, nominees must meet the following criteria: continuing involvement in community affairs, community involvement must enhance in a meaningful way the common good of the community, dedicated to service about self, work should be of unselfish voluntary nature and service should be clearly identifiable as worthwhile for community betterment.

The R. Clay Simmons Exemplary Enterprise Award will recognize a business in the greater Starkville area that has made outstanding contributions in the community and has manifested superior business practices.

"The R. Clay Simmons Award is given to a business who is committed to the community and all the practices they display makes them an example of the Starkville community," Prather said.

Prather said these businesses also encourage their employees to serve the community through volunteer work.

The criteria for R. Clay Simmons Exemplary Enterprise Award include civic involvement, educational advancement, economic development and business practices.

"Other community awards will be given during the banquet, but these are the only two that are nominated by the community," Prather said.
