Heritage Museum wins statewide honor

October 7, 2010

Following years of public accolades and awards from the City of Starkville, the state recognized the Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum Wednesday evening.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History presented its award to the museum for thriving without paid staff, museum president Joan Wilson said.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have the community behind us,” Wilson said. “This is quite an honor.”
A recent letter from the MDAH states: “The Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum is a model local historical museum. That it is staffed entirely by volunteers is extremely impressive.”
Volunteers from Mississippi State University’s School of Architecture helped renovate the museum almost two years ago, while landscape architecture students later installed the city’s first rain garden to address the museum’s drainage problems.
Michelle Jones, local preservation assistant coordinator for the MDAH’s historic preservation division, said that the department gave out only six awards Thursday.
“The Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum has worked with us on their collections policy and have done a great job in cataloguing their displays,” Jones said. “That doesn’t happen in all communities in our state.”
Located on 206 Fellowship Street, the museum was established in 1976 to celebrate America’s 200th birthday.
The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on selected Saturdays. Tours are available by resignation.
