Local scout's project benefits church
Troop 45 scout Cole Wood is using his eagle scout project as a way to give back to his church.
Wood, a sophomore at Starkville Academy, has been a member of New Covenant since a young age, so it didn’t take much time for him to decide he wanted his eagle scout project to involve his church.
“It’s the church I’ve grown up in, and I just wanted to do something special,” Wood said.
Wood began brainstorming project ideas with is father, Bart, and pastor Bill Murphy. They started with an idea to commemorate loved ones in the church who have passed away.
From there, the idea grew into a prayer garden that will be situated among the trees in the yard of the church.
“The prayer garden will take a circular shape with a wooden pergola overhead,” Wood said. “It will consist of benches, shrubs, flower and trees surrounding the circle, and in the center, there will be a water fountain. Around the fountain will be stones with the option for people to write and dedicate their loved ones name on.”
Wood would like his prayer garden to be a tranquil place that people from his church utilize for prayer and reflection.
Wood hopes to complete his project in time to earn his eagle badge before December as this is the hundredth anniversary of scouting, and the hundredth anniversary badge is particularly special to Wood, he said.
“It’s a really big accomplishment. It’s one of the highest honors in scouting,” Wood said of his eagle.
But to complete his project on time, Wood is relying on donations for the community to assist in the project, which is projected to cost close to $5,000.
Wood would like to thank Bucky Murphy, brother of Bill Murphy, and Robert Clark at Coca-Cola for their generous donations.
For those interested in assisting Wood, donations can me mailed to 100 Little John Lane, Starkville, MS 39759. Donations can also be dropped off at The Little Dooey in Starkville.
