A man’s report of an alleged assault on the Mississippi State campus Sunday afternoon was false, university police have determined in a continuing investigation.

As a result, the man — Kenneth Austin Hood, 28 — is being charged with filing a false police report, Thomas Bourgeois, the university’s dean of students, said in a statement issued Monday.
Hood is a former MSU student, university police confirmed Monday. Hood had told MSU police he was assaulted and robbed by two African-American males in the first-floor restroom of McCool Hall at approximately 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Hood even gave police a a detailed description of his “attackers,” which university officials made public Sunday morning as MSU police officers searched for “suspects” in the incident.

“Filing a false report is a serious charge,” Bourgeois said, adding conviction can result in up to a $1,000 fine and a year in prison.
He said false reports are dangerous to the general campus population because they unnecessarily can divert valuable police resources, among other reasons.

“We treat false reports as seriously as we treat crime reports,” Bourgeois said.
