Mildred Freeman Shurlds

MABEN –– The funeral for Mildred Freeman Shurlds will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Maben United Methodist Church. Committal services will be at Maben Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Scarlet Shepperd, Harpole McMullin and Rank Boyte will officiate.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Maben United Methodist Church. 
Mrs. Shurlds, born August 11, 1923, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.P. (Pete) Freeman and Ruby Harpole Freeman, and by one sister, Dorothy Freeman Barton.
Mrs. Shurlds was a long-time teacher in the public schools of Mississippi, having taught at Cumberland, Carrollton, Vaiden, Tchula, Maben and East Webster at Cumberland.  She was a graduate of Mississippi State University with certification in social studies, English and communications.
The great love of her life was her husband, children and their spouses, grandchildren, students, friends, church and home.
A special thanks is extended to Linda Jones, Goldia Burchfield, and Donna Shurlds, for their loving care and excellent medical attention given to Mildred for many years.
Testimony of her devotion and love is the success of all her children in their professions and marriages. And, she would want it said that their spouses should share in the credit. What a great family she has!
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Maury; her four children, Maury (Mary Jane) Shurlds Jr. of Richmond, Va.; Marcia Shurlds (Robert) McGlohn of Birmingham, Ala, Henry W. (Ginny) Shurlds III of Slidell, La. and Dudley F. (Donna) Shurlds of Maben. She is also survived by nine grandchildren listed in the same order as their parents-Jackson and Mary Kathryn, Emily and Robyn, Walker and Abbey and Elizabeth, Henry and Richard.
Pallbearers are Earl Blade, James Ridge, Paul Crowley, Gary Kinard, Thomas Bluitt, Jessie Burchfield Jr. and Elkins Cox.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Sue Simmons, Dr. Sam Newell, Charles Ridge, Frank Gwin Jr., Andy Barham, Dr. Jerry Reed, Dr. Stanly Godbold, Paul Cherry, the Rev. Prentiss Gordon, the Rev. Rank Boyte and Wyman Bishop Jr.
Welch Funeral Home of Maben is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Maben United Methodist Church, 3999 Webster Street, Maben, Mississippi, 39750.
