Upon further review by the Mississippi High School Activities Association, Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell was wrongfully ejected by members of the officiating crew that worked last Friday's game at Horn Lake.
After looking at forms and letters submitted by Mitchell and SHS Athletic Director Stan Miller, MHSAA Executive Director Ennis Proctor overturned the ejection.
"(Proctor) spoke with everybody involved, read the letters and he's thrown the ejection out," Miller said Tuesday. "After looking at all of the facts, he decided that he would override the ejection and there will be no penalty."
Mitchell will not be fined and he will be on the sideline Friday night when the Yellowjackets host Southaven in a key Class 6A, Region 1 game at 7 p.m. It is also Homecoming for Starkville.
In addition to the ejection override, the members of the officiating crew the Jackets saw at both the DeSoto Central and Horn Lake games will not be allowed to work the Olive Branch game on Oct. 22.
"Dr. Proctor said we should not have had them for those two games in a row, but we will definitely not have them for the third game," Miller said.
The ejection that shouldn't have taken place occurred with 7:33 left to play in the Jackets' 49-19 over Horn Lake.
Mitchell argued consecutive penalty calls by the referees with Starkville leading 42-13.
After the game, Mitchell said all he was questioning was the timing of the penalties in a blowout situation.
Miller said the forms and letters were submitted to the MHSAA on Monday spelling out details about what Mitchell said without the use of profanity and explained the situation at the game where the Jackets were up by a large margin and the officials were still throwing penalty flags after the coaches met at halftime with the thought of speeding the game along.
