The Starkville Police Department received a favorable report by a Mississippi Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (MSLEAC) evaluation team, officials say.
The team spent several days at the SPD last week as part of the departmentâ€™s state reaccreditation process.
The SPD was first accredited by MSLEAC in 2008 and faced a review by the agency after a 3-year period to maintain its accreditation. That review included an on-site evaluation by a three-member MSLEAC team last week to ensure the department complied with 122 professional standards.
The MSLEAC evaluation team â€” Brenda Smith, Billy Lane and Bob Morgan â€” conducted a rigorous inspection on all aspects of the departmentâ€™s operations, interviewed community members at length and conducted a 2-hour call-in session to allow members of the public to comment on any concerns regarding the department.
During an exit interview at the conclusion of the evaluation visit, the MSLEAC team told Police Chief David Lindley that their report to the commission would be favorable when it convenes in November at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy in the Jackson area.
Upon receiving reaccreditation from MSLEAC, SPD officials will travel to Baltimore, Md., in March to receive recognition by the national Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
The Police Departmentâ€™s reaccreditation process was spearheaded by Capt. Frank Nichols and officers Laura Hines Roberson and Holley Slaughter.
The MSLEAC accreditation program focuses on six primary goals:
â€¢ Strengthening crime prevention and control capabilities.
â€¢ Formalizing essential management procedures.
â€¢ Establishing fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices.
â€¢ Improving service delivery.
â€¢ Solidifying cooperation and coordination.
â€¢ Boosting citizen and staff confidence in the agency.
