MSU Wind Ensemble to perform tonight

September 28, 2010

The Mississippi State University Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. today in the McComas Hall theater.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The program will open with Carl Teike’s “Old Comrades,” arguably thought to be the most popular march ever written by a European composer.
The music of Richard Strauss will be featured in the popular and beautiful “Allerseelen” from his “Four Last Songs.”
The program will include Ron Nelson’s “Sonoran Desert Holiday,” von Suppe’s “Pique Dame Overture” and contemporary composer Eric Whitacre’s “Noisy Wheels of Joy.”
The student Saxophone Quartet will perform George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” and the Wind Ensemble will close the program with a circus gallop,” They’re Off,” written for the circus bands of the early 1900s.
The Wind Ensemble is the premiere instrumental ensemble at Mississippi State University.
Membership is extended to the most advanced musicians through competitive audition, regardless of university major.
In addition to two to three campus performances each semester, the Wind Ensemble conducts a regional performance tour annually during the spring semester.
The band has been the featured university band at the Mississippi Bandmaster’s Convention three times in the past 10 years and has performed for the Mississippi All-State Concert Band.
In 2008, the Wind Ensemble conducted a performance of the British Isles, culminating with a concert at the Royal Armed Forces School of Music in Twickenham, England.
The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Director of Bands Elva Kaye Lance.
