Jackson – Nash Street of Starkville, Mississippi has been awarded a position on the Mississippi Artists Roster through the Mississippi Arts Commission.
The Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Roster is a listing of artists who have been accepted to the Teaching Artist Roster, the Mississippi Artist Roster or both. Each artist or arts group applied and went through a thorough review by a panel of artists, presenters and educators.
The Mississippi Artist Roster features professional artists who demonstrate
• mastery of the artistic discipline and quality of work;
• capacity for demonstrating or interpreting the artistic discipline or tradition;
• history of successful performances/presentations and touring capability; and
• quality of promotional materials or ability to develop materials for presenter use.
Artists use the roster to promote their work. Photos, a description of the organization, and contact information are listed on the MAC website and are printed in an artists’ catalogue each year. Organizations can receive funding for artists who are on this roster by applying for a mini grant with the Mississippi Arts Commission to assist with covering performance fees for festivals, concerts, or for demonstrations.
The Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, serves the residents of the state by providing grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage. Established in 1968, the Mississippi Arts Commission is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, the Phil Hardin Foundation, Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and other private sources.
The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.
“Organizations across the state who receive grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission continue to prove that arts programs are vital to the success of their community. The grants awarded by the Commission provide funding for the staging of festivals, theatre performances and many other arts-related activities,” said Malcolm White, Executive Director of MAC. “The arts provide a positive environment for learning, both in the classroom and in communities. Arts funding has a significant multiplier and for every dollar spent in the creative sector, eight dollars are realized in the local economy. That’s a good investment for any business.”
To request funds to help pay for the artists’ fees, you may apply for an mini grant or Project Grant in one of the four program areas: Arts Industry, Arts-Based Community Development, Arts in Education and Mississippi Heritage. These grants are portions of the $1.64 million in grants the Commission will award in 2010-2011.
The grants are made possible by continued funding by the Mississippi Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
