Future, the poet, returning to MSU
The Campus Activities Board will host Future, the poet, in a return appearance on the Mississippi State campus at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Colvard Union Dawg House.
Future — whose given name is Edwin Wilson Jr. — has been creatively compiling his words onto paper since 2006, which became the same year he actively participated in his first poetry slam at his alma mater, the University of Michigan.
After placing second in the competition, he accepted his calling: Spoken word performance.
With his previous National Football League aspirations behind him, he began challenging any and all poetry aspects of Detroit and managed to capture the city with his unique stage presence and powerful words, which was all it took to realize his words were the key to his future.
Future has continued to take on the world of spoken word performance one step at a time.
His determination and the effects of his words have led him to share stages with artists such as gospel singer Yolanda Adams, popular author Omar Tyree, rapper Common and poet Nikki Giovanni.
Continuously pushing the boundaries and opening doors for other poets, he founded “Future’s Lyricist Lounge,” which is located in his hometown of Flint, Mich.
Traveling from coast to coast, Future has become a sought-after commodity and is steadily becoming one of the most anticipated and creative artists throughout the country.
By continuing to be involved in his hometown community and fraternity, Iota Phi Theta, he has managed to remain humble and relate to the changing society.
His work tackles soulful, smooth melodramatic issues and members of society constantly encounter.
