Percussion recital set Sunday

Mississippi State Music Department professor Robert J. Damm will present a faculty pPercussion Recital on Sunday.
The program, being presented in the McComas Hall theater, will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
The recital will feature many world music instruments and styles. The program will begin with one of Damm’s original compositions entitled “Ritmos de Congas” for three congas with CD accompaniment and consisting of Cuban and Brazilian styles. Next on the program will be a work written in homage of three historic Apache chiefs using Native American drums and rattles.
“Calypsocation” (featured on Damm and Edwin Daniel’s “Sounds and Places” CD) will be played by a band made up of Edwin Daniel and Josh Gray on guitar, Ed Swan on bass guitar, and Mike Freed on drums.
Gray — guitarist, composer, and recording engineer — is owner of Gray Matter Studios in Starkville. Swan is associate professor of computer Science and Engineering at MSU.
Mike Freed, an attorney, is owner of The Freed Law Group in Amory. He graduated from MSU in 1996 with a degree in music education. While attending MSU he was a student of Damm’s and played in several bands including the Puerto Rican Rum Drunks and Law of Nature.
Daniel, an architect with Dale and Associates, is a graduate of MSU’s School of Architecture. Damm played in Edwin’s Blues Axis band for 12 years until Edwin left Columbus for his current position in Jackson.
Damm’s recital will include a snare drum solo in tribute to American composer Harry Partch, a duet with Freed exploring the interactive potential of basic percussion instruments, and a marimba trio played with MSU music Education majors Will Currie and Andrew Barnes.
The recital will close with a drum set solo.
