Police: Crash victim believed to have had stroke

October 25, 2010

A West Point man was airlifted to a Jackson hospital following a Friday morning crash in Starkville and did not die, contrary to prior reports.
Vincent O. Tubbs, 44, of 1972 Bayless Drive, West Point, is believed to have suffered a stroke just before the crash occurred on Highway 12 East at the Spring Street intersection shortly before 8 a.m. Friday.
Starkville Police Department officials initially reported that Tubbs had died following the crash, but family members reported Tuesday that he had been airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Tubbs is continuing to be treated there, his family members said.
According to preliminary accident reports, Tubbs was headed east on Highway 12 in a silver 2003 Ford F150 pickup when he struck a black 2004 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Samuel C Jenkins, 22, of Benton.
Jenkins’ Ram was stopped at the intersection by a red traffic light when Tubbs’ F150 struck his rear bumper, knocking it diagonally through the intersection and onto the shoulder of the road on the south side of Highway 12 in front of the Hampton Inn.
Tubbs’ pickup traveled beyond Jenkins’ vehicle, coming to rest in the ditch along the east side of the roadway.
Though the accident remains under investigation, it is believed Tubbs’ stroke resulted in his loss of control of the F150, SPD officials said.
Jenkins and two passengers in his pickup were not injured in the crash. All three were wearing safety belts.

Editor's note: The Daily News staff apologizes for the incorrect reporting regarding the initial story on the crash and is glad to set the record straight.
