SA soccer loses to Jackson Prep

August 31, 2010

The situation looked very good early for the Starkville Academy soccer team against Jackson Prep Tuesday afternoon.
Sallie Kate Richardson scored on a breakaway goal in the first 10 minutes and the Lady Volunteers took the lead.
However, Prep scored four unanswered goals with two of them coming from Laura Lee Smith and went on to defeat Starkville Academy 6-2 at the Starkville Sportplex Soccer Complex.
It seemed once Prep gained the momentum, the Lady Vols had a difficult time getting it back.
"The goals we gave up were very preventable," Starkville Academy soccer coach Robert Gardner said. "As soon as we learn how to fix those, I think we're going to be in a good place.
"I'm not disappointed in the performance. Any time you play Jackson Prep, you know you are going to play a good team. I thought we were just as good as them in the first half with just as many chances. We just didn't put them away. The last 20 minutes were very difficult for us."
After going down 3-1 at halftime, the Lady Vols had an immediate opportunity to cut the margin. Richardson had another break and her shot attempt was saved by the Prep goal keeper.
Starkville Academy had other shots at goal in the second half that were turned away.
"We had plenty of chances," Gardner said. "It's just a matter of taking advantage of those chances. Unfortunately, we did not do that, let them stick around, stay in the game and six goals later here we are."
Richardson, who scored both goals for the Lady Vols, experienced a cramp late in the match but returned to finish the action.
The next match for Starkville Academy (3-5) takes place at Magnolia Heights on Sept. 7.
