Scout dedicates eagle project

October 14, 2010

Boy scout Jack Bryan took on a large project on his way to making Eagle Scout.
“I knew I had enough time to get Eagle before I turned 18, so I wanted to do a really big project,” Bryan said.
Bryan, a Starkville High School student, cross country team member and tennis team member, decided to build a large pavilion outside of the tennis courts of SHS.
The tennis pavilion will serve as shelter from scorching sun and pouring rain for the athletes who enjoy the facilities.
From fundraising to completion, the pavilion took 13 months to complete and countless hours of building. But after its completion, Bryan went one step further to make the project even more meaningful.
“When I started the project, I came up with the idea to dedicate it to my coaches because they weren’t going to be the coaches for the next season,” Bryan explained. ‘They were my coaches seventh and eighth grade year... They’re very understanding and easy to work with.”
The large tennis pavilion was dedicated to Coach Jerry Henderson and Coach Mary Ruth Parvin on Oct. 8 in a special ceremony on campus to introduce the Parvin-Henderson Pavilion.
“Jack Bryan is the epitome of every parent, teacher, and coach’s dream. He is faithful, hard-working, polite, considerate, talented, respectful, brilliant, God-fearing and loyal. Jack represents all of the highest attributes of a scout,” Parvin said. “Having this pavilion named for me (and Coach Henderson) is the greatest honor of my nineteen years as the Starkville High School tennis coach.”
Henderson was equally as touched by the gesture saying, “It’s very nice and very humbling. (Jack) is an outstanding young man.”
“I’m glad I can come out here even after I graduate and see my work,” Bryan said. “I’m glad I can be apart of the future of SHS.”
