SHS cross country competing against region's best

September 28, 2010

The Starkville High School Cross Country team competed with the top teams in the region in Memphis Sept. 25th at the Brooks Memphis Twilight XC Classic.
Seven SHS boys ran the varsity race with Kamau Bostic finishing 27th out of 350 Varsity boy runners with a time of 16:46.
Joseph MacGown was 80th with a time of 17:38.
Other SHS times included Damien Grady's 18:25, Aaron Remotigue's 18:45, Ethan Musser's 19:02, Davis Josey's 19:25, and Jonnel Ward's 19:54.
In the two-mile middle school boys race, SHS had four runners in the top 20.
Christian Kingery finished 12th with a time of 12:37, Daniel Ruff came in 13th (12:42), Michael Godley was 16th (12:48), and Luke Josey was 20th (12:58).
The Lady Yellowjackets also found success.  In the two-mile middle school girls race, two SHS runners placed in the top 10.
Kate Mattox placed fourth overall with a time of 12:45, and Abigail Arinder placed ninth overall with a time of 13:42.
The varsity girls held strong in their race, with Walker Mattox placing 10th overall while running her 5K in 21:53.
Anna Jackson (23:25),  Ashley Albritton (23:36), and Meghan Wolf (23:48) also were top-four finishers.
Starkville head coach Caroline Woomer says that her team's success in Memphis is just another example of hard work paying off. Hard work that isn't going unnoticed.
"We did not have to spend much time building mileage because the athletes built their mileage on their own throughout the summer," said Woomer. "Our expectations are high as we go into the remainder of the season. We have been told throughout the state that the Starkville High School cross country team is the surprise team of the season."
SHS runs again at Northeast Lauderdale on Saturday.
